About Your Coach
I believe we're living through a nervous system crisis—millions of capable, intelligent people walking around in bodies that feel unsafe, disconnected from their own inner wisdom, often not trusting their minds or their bodies. My work exists to change that. I want to live in a world where people trust both their bodies and their minds, where nervous system regulation is as common as physical fitness, and where feeling safe in your own skin isn't a luxury—it's a given.
I'm incredibly lucky that I get to spend my days helping people come home to themselves. There's nothing more profound than watching someone recognize that their body isn't the enemy—it's been the protector all along.
Here's what I need you to know: I understand this work intimately because I've lived it. I spent years believing my body was the problem—managing chronic pain, anxiety, and digestive issues while pushing through a relentless internal war with myself. I tried everything that "smart" people try: therapy, exercise, diet changes, willpower. But nothing stuck until I learned that intellect isn't the right vehicle for this kind of healing. My nervous system needed something different. My body needed to feel safe first, then everything else could follow.
This journey led me from personal trainer to social worker to nervous system specialist. Every credential I hold, every method I've learned, every framework I've created—it all comes from the recognition that transformation happens in the body, not around it.

I'm Melissa Romano—a Licensed Social Worker, Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapist, and creator of the S.A.F.E. Method. I'm also the author of Everyday Nervous System Regulation (Penguin Random House) and The Vagus Nerve Deck, and the COO of The Change Initiative, where I oversee a sober-living home for women and children. My approach weaves together neuroscience, applied polyvagal theory, somatic experiencing, and somatic parts work with ancient somatic practices and yoga therapy—but always delivered in real language, without the clinical jargon.
